Let us understand the
material for vehicle armour in this post; we will come to know the complete
concept behind the selection of material for vehicle armour after reading this
post.Â
Mechanical property of material used in vehicle armour Hardness
Material used in vehicle armour should have good hardness as these are used in that area where security is main objective.Â
Normally vehicle armour
material hardness depends on the grades and these are as listed below

Failure mechanism that should be considered during the selection of the material for this application
As we know that armour
material will be used where there will be impact loading situation, we have to
focus on relationship between micro-structure parameters and strength
properties of material.
As we know that
controlling of hard material occur normally due to state of interfaces &
process that take place on micro level, hence the best way of inspecting the
composition of failure is local auger electron spectroscopy.
In this process we have
to inspect the effect of heat treatment on the failure mechanism of armour
materials.
During the selection of
material for this application we also consider the failure criteria such as
Rankine criteria.
Commonly used materials
- Steel – steel is the best material to use as armour material as steel has good hardness and properties of ballistic protection.
- Aluminum- Aluminum is alos used for armour material but when there is restriction of light weight.
- Uranium – uranium posses high density so it may be used in armour.
